Hi Everyone!
Today I got an email from the owner of the barn where I am currently taking lessons and I, as well as some other people, have been "invited" to an info session this Friday concerning becoming a "camp assistant" (that's the best way I know how to describe it right now). So, I can very well be working at some riding daycamps this summer. I am soooo excitied. I've helped out before and loved it, but it's been a long time. There was a sheet posted in the tack room where you could sign up, but I didn't bother putting my name down because I figured I would try and get a job somewhere else, like a a book store or something, but I'd much rather work at the barn. I can't wait!!

I can see why you would like the barn job but if you are looking to make some $$$ for school, the book store might pay better, just MHO

Eileen - have you ever worked in a bookstore? They don't pay diddly - especially for part-timers. Of course, it might pay more than the stable - depending on the hours.
I've worked retail and I've worked in stables - give me horses over people any day.

Yes, people are completely crazy, and you will never realize how many are unless you work in a bar or in retail.

Well I'm going to see how the barn/summer camp route goes, and if it doesn't work out, then I'm going to head the book store/retail/some form of employment route.

That is so true (worked in bars/restaurants for 8 years now), however, I have encountered my share of weirdos around barns as well......

I used to work at summer camps giving lessons. Its a fun way to spend the summer if you like kids and horses, and its very entertaining at times.
I will say this to you as it is what my mom has always said to me.
DO WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY EVEN IF IT DOSENT PAY MUCH.
I WOULD RATHER WORK A JOB THAT PAID CRAP AND MADE ME HAPPY THAN STUCK AT A JOB I HATE THE PAID GOOD.
IF IT MAKES YOU HAPPY DO IT EVEN IF IT IS SHOVELING POOP!!
GOOD LUCK!!! and i hope you have fun

tbbrat, no I have never worked in a bookstore, I have worked at stables, barns, ranches etc as well as my own barn. I also worked in a job where I had to deal with the public, that could be worse than cleaning up behind a horse.
I guess I was just thinking that for a student that needed the extra cash it would be to his/her benifit to go with the books, even if there was an education benifit going on....just a suggestion I did not realize that the bookstore was not a great paying position.

good luck with the barn job! Sounds like fun. Take it from me - I followed my dream (I train horses/teach lessons) and although sometimes money is tight, there's no greater feeling than getting up every morning and going to a job I absolutely LOVE! It may not always be an easy road, but its still one I'm glad to travel. Forever greatful to those who helped me get here, too.
