Caring for Legs After Competition

Postby Keetee » Sun Nov 20, 2005 9:56 am

What does everyone do with their horses legs after competition (rub
down with liniment, poultice, wrap them, etc.)? What products and
methods do you like and which ones have you had problems with?

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#what kind of competition? Is there something wrong with the horse your competiting with?#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#
When something goes wrong in a show, it's actually the best time because you learn from it. You ask yourself 'what can I do better?' When everything goes OK, you don't ask yourself that question --- ANKY

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#I rub down with Absorbine or something like that. So far I like Absorbine the best, I do occasionally try different products, but I find Absorbine is the one I feel the most. I'll rub down after a show if we've done 2 tests, or a lesson if it has been more work than what we usually do. I don't know if it helps, but it doesn't hurt!#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Honestly, I think cold-hosing or ice boots are probably more effective at reducing any inflammation, but, call me a bad horse mum if you will, I am not going to spend 20 minutes per leg cold-hosing once we get home after a show. If I had a groom....#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#FONT color=#8000ff#ed_cl#I tend to use liniment, like vetrolin gel or something (if I don't have any, I'll use rubbing alcohol) and since I use quilts and standing wraps for the trailer, not boots - I do it before we leave the show grounds. So she gets trailered home linimented and wrapped - and stays like that for 24 hrs so the gel soaks in.#ed_op#/FONT#ed_cl##ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#FONT color=#8000ff#ed_cl##ed_op#/FONT#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#FONT color=#8000ff#ed_cl#Don't forget to take braids out before you leave the show or the barn...its not good for their necks to be braided tightly for extended periods of time. :)#ed_op#/FONT#ed_cl##ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

If its just flat I nromally just put Green Cool on my horses legs> If im at a show were we competed in Hunter/Jumper i will put on Poltuce (I have never been able to spell that) and then rap his legs for the night. #ed_op#/FONT#ed_cl##ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#So much depends on what you were doing and what the footing was like. I usually poultice and wrap overnight. I don't like Absorbine becauses it can cause irritation.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#
Frogs in a basket. Oh, one jumped out, grab that frog.

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#It depends.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#If I've ridden really hard, especially if Zippy has gotten out for a few days and is a bit puffy, I'll put cool gel (the green stuff) or absorbine on. If I go to a show and just do flat, I don't usually wrap her after or anything, as long as she gets out the next day she's always been fine. But if I jump, then I'd wrap her with some cottons. #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#After competition I rub Ebony's legs down with witch hazel and then stable wrap her overnight then turn her out the next day.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#
It's not the size of the horse that matters. It is the size of their heart.

Leg Care

Postby fusspot » Mon Nov 21, 2005 11:11 am

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#After tough competition I would rub with Absorbine. I've used it for over 30 years and it has never caused irritation, it's mostly an herbal formula. #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Any heat inducing liniment will increase the blood flow the area. Increased blow flow will carry away any toxins (responsible for stiffness and swelling). Absorbine also helps repair tissue. #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#My QH has mild arthritic changes in his left fore knee. My vet recommended I rub him 2x daily with Absorbine in addition to rubbing before AND after each ride. We have been doing this for over 6 months and he has not show any symptoms of soreness. #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Depends on the horse and its problems. I've never felt a need to do anything with Teddy's legs, he never gets puffy or hot after competition. The racehorses - depended on the trainer. Some were poulticed all round after every race, regardless, others just an alcohol wrap. I had one or two needed a different treatment on every leg! #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#
