#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Lix, the Carson's auctions up in Listowel are reputable.  I don't believe there are meat trucks there.  The people who are buying, are buying riding horses.  I have a bottom line price that I would take for Dali and I won't let him go if I don't get that price at the auction.  And believe me, my bottom-line price is waaay higher than what the current meat prices are.  #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#I had the same reservations about taking Dali to Carson's as those you mentioned.  I was worried about taking him up there and not knowing what might happen to him, but the BO and a couple other people assured me that if someone is paying decent money for a horse, the likelihood is that they will take good care of him.  #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Besides, one way or another, regardless of *which* option I use to sell him, once he's gone, I won't have any control over what happens with him anyway.  There's nothing to say that a private person won't buy him and *then* sell him for meat down the road...not that this is likely to happen, but you know what I'm saying?  Any time you sell a horse, you really don't know where they're gonna end up.  It's the risk you take when you decide to sell.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#As far as how the Carson's auctions work, he publishes a catalog, so people can go online ahead of the sale, to see the horses that will be at the auction.  Then, at the auction, each horse has its own "stall" and buyers can walk around and look at them.  There is also a warm-up ring, where people ride their horses before they go into the auction ring.  Dali is so flashy that I'm sure someone will scoop him up.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Taking him to the auction will only happen if I've had no interest in him by the next sale.  He needs to go and he'll get lots more exposure at the auction than he will by me just posting on-line ads.  #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#  #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Chenders!  Goodness, I hope it didn't sound like I was condemning you for wanting to bring him there!  To the contrary, I know how hard it is to sell a horse and I was once in your shoes, remember.  It was horrible to have this beautiful, healthy animal, sitting in a stall with me not enthused about riding him, and I felt too, like he was wasting away.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#My first comment on me not going to a reputable auction was just an aside.  I do know there are good ones out there!  They sell RCMP bred horses at auctions! LOL.  And I'm also dying to go one day to that big auction with all those gorgeous draft X's that go for like 5000+!  #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#I know that he will not go for meat!  Not with the price you want.  People can get horses for meat for 1000$.  Gosh, I really hope it didn't sound like I was insinuating that.  #ed_op#IMG src="http://forums.equestrianconnection.com/richedit/smileys//smiley5.gif"#ed_cl##ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#*Sigh*, you are right though, whether you bring your horse to an auction, or whether you sell him privately, you can not control what will happen to them.  It's just the way life is.  #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Sorry again if I sounded bad.#ed_op#IMG src="http://forums.equestrianconnection.com/richedit/smileys/Word_Negative/4.gif"#ed_cl#  I really wasn't trying too.  I swear, I am the queen of saying things all wrong.  LOL#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#I'm sure everything will be fine, auction or not!  :D  #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#No offense taken at all, Lix!  I knew you weren't implying anything.  Auctions *do* have a bad rep because some of them are truly BAD and you hear horror stories.  For instance, I would *never* take Dali to the Kitchener Stockyard auction because that auction *does* attract the meat dealers.  But I've heard only good things about the Carson auction up in Listowel, and I went to the one back in December and all the horses there looked to be in very good condition.  I think it's pretty reputable.  #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Anyway, hopefully I won't have to go that route.  I'm hopeful that now that the weather is improving, someone will come along who will be perfect for Dali and I won't have to take him up to Listowel at all.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#      #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#The worst thing about selling horses is you never know what the new owner will do with them once they've outlived their usefulness. I guess most people are like us and would do the right thing, but it's such a worry. I've lost track of one that I sold because I plain and simple don't want know. It's beyond our control and there's no point in keeping a horse that isn't right for you, but it preys on my mind. #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#BTW, these thoughts are not in any way meant as a criticism to Chenders or anyone else who is selling a horse, I have one for sale right now myself.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Yes, it's hard Ruth.  In an ideal world, we would keep each horse until the day it dies, but the reality is that few of us are able to afford more than one horse at a time.  If I could've done that, I'd still have Leo (my QH).#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Dali is the first horse I've sold, so this is all a new experience for me.  I hope that he will go to someone who will take the kind of care with him that I've taken, but like you say, once they're out of our care, we really have no control over them anymore.  It is something I worry about, but there's not much that any of us can do, unless we ask for right of first refusal if the buyer decides to sell the horse at some point in the future.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#    #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#I ended up buying a farm in order to afford to keep more than one!#ed_op#IMG src="http://forums.equestrianconnection.com/richedit/smileys/Thinking/1.gif"#ed_cl#Not sure all the time that that was the best solution! And still, I end up selling some, because I'm a bit of a collector and like to breed. I managed to stop breeding for 3 years but fell off the wagon last year.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

LOL  #ed_op#br#ed_cl#
#ed_op#br#ed_cl#
Well want to hear a doozy?#ed_op#br#ed_cl#
#ed_op#br#ed_cl#
In the fall I put my BO's filly online for her. They don't have
internet, but I put her up at their request and it has drummed up some
interest. If they e-mail me I give them her phone number, tell them
what I know, and send a pic.#ed_op#br#ed_cl#
#ed_op#br#ed_cl#
Anyhow, a week ago I get this 18yr old looking for a filly to do
reining/cutting with and to "grow with". The filly I posted is a QH
with reining training, and her parents are reiners/cutters. I'm not a
QH fan but she's such a sweetie I quite like her.#ed_op#br#ed_cl#
#ed_op#br#ed_cl#
So I send a picture...and the girl writes back saying the filly is not
what she's looking for and she wants something more like an arabian or
saddlebred.....so WHY are you looking at QH's? I don't quite get it.#ed_op#br#ed_cl#
#ed_op#br#ed_cl#
Basically, she wanted something fancy....but a QH....which is gonna be tough to find.#ed_op#br#ed_cl#
#ed_op#br#ed_cl#
I recommended a few breeders I know, but geez people!#ed_op#br#ed_cl#
#ed_op#br#ed_cl#
#ed_op#br#ed_cl#
Tell me where you're going to find a QH that looks like an arabian or a saddlebred? Duh!#ed_op#br#ed_cl#
#ed_op#br#ed_cl#
#ed_op#br#ed_cl#
I'm sure you will find Dali an awesome home. There's the perfect owner
out there somewhere, and with spring comes people horse shopping.#ed_op#br#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#GD. it may be a teenage thing with the saddlebred or arabian reinging horse thing.  At least is sounds to me like a girl with h er head in the clouds and a fantacy thing going on in her mind.  YOu know how that happens sometimes with the younger group...I am just guessing, but that is what it sounds like....lol#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Maybe she should actually get an Arab or an ASB then! There's Morgans that do reining and cutting, QH's are the specialists, but other breeds can do it. Probably just not quite as efficiently.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

When something goes wrong in a show, it's actually the best time because you learn from it. You ask yourself 'what can I do better?' When everything goes OK, you don't ask yourself that question --- ANKY

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Xena, if you're talking about Dali being a possibility for EventPony, I already PM'd her about him yesterday #ed_op#IMG src="http://forums.equestrianconnection.com/richedit/smileys//grin.gif"#ed_cl#  I don't think she's quite ready to buy a horse yet, but I agree that Dali might be perfect for her.  #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#(And, 13 isn't old...Dali is in his prime right now...and the fact that he's older means he's not a crazy youngster anymore).#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

That's what I told her, I said I could link her up with some morgan and
arabian people if that's what she's looking for, something fancy.#ed_op#br#ed_cl#
#ed_op#br#ed_cl#
Morgans and arabians do reining and cutting quite well, given the opportunity and training.#ed_op#br#ed_cl#
#ed_op#br#ed_cl#
Eileen - I know...as a kid I was under the impression that there are
golden horses - not palaminos, but ones solidly a gold colour...but not
chestnut...and that horses that colour were usually arabian...I was
what, 8 at the time? Definately had my head in the clouds, LOL!#ed_op#br#ed_cl#
