how do I decide?

Postby Cheryl » Wed Aug 10, 2005 12:20 am

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Life has made it the real possibility that I may have to sell one of my horses. The ex was paying for them but abruptly stopped and informed me 3 days before July board was due. At this point I don't think I can financially keep both of them. Problem is how do people decide who to sell and who to keep? I adore both of them. Both have their good points and bad points but to me they are my babies. How can I pick which baby I can't keep??#ed_op#IMG src="http://forums.equestrianconnection.com/richedit/smileys/Sad/2.gif"#ed_cl##ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#NOI. Seeing your post of Aug. 9, perhaps it would be easier to sell the sound horse?#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Cheryl, do you have the option of putting them both on pasture board? That might be one way of cutting down costs. Another would be to get a part-boarder for one or both of them and/or lease one of them out. Would one of them be suitable as a school-horse, to help you reduce your board? There are lots of things you can do. If you *have* to sell one of them, sell the one that is less "useable" for you (ie. keep the one that has the most potential for you). #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Sorry to hear about the situation you're in but it's not hopeless. There are ways to keep two horses, cheaply. #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#FONT color=#0060bf#ed_cl#Well I gave my advice already but it's a rock and a hard place poor Cheryl is stuck between. Pasture bored in durham is hard to come by. There's a few places around me that will do it and are relatively cheap, but it's really far for her. I know several people who'd jump at the option of a part board or free lease, but again it's the distance, whether they go there, or one of the horses go somewhere else. It's a tough call to make especially since both of the horses are equally awesome. #ed_op#IMG src="http://forum.equestrianconnection.com/richedit/smileys/Sad/7.gif"#ed_cl##ed_op#/FONT#ed_cl##ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#There are options like a few have mentioned. Sometimes it is necessary to find a private farm to board at where the board is less. Especially, since you have one that is not sound now. Literally drive in your area and knock on doors. Take on another job IF you really want to hang onto them both. I would quickly get to the local tack shops, feed mills, barn BB and post for a part boarder or to free lease one. #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Look for every option you can. Part boarding, leasing. Anything to help cover costs. Do knock on doors, you never know. What about breeding? Can the unsound one be leased as a broodmare for a year? Does she have skills/pedigree someone admires? What about finding a temporary home with someone you trust, who can afford to keep her. Can you exchange work/lessons/training/whatever for board someplace else?#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#If you do have to make a decision, think long and hard. Choose the horse you have a really good bond with, one that is useful to you. If you love both, then maybe ask those who know both horses well. Do not get defensive, just listen.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#I'm so sorry about your situation. Good luck with whatever happens. #ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#If you can find a place without an arena then that could conceivably knock your board almost in half, whether or not it was pasture board. Then you'd be keeping both horses at the close to the same cost as what you'd pay for one where there is an arena. I have done that, taken on extra hours, worked off some of my board, etc. in order to keep my horse.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#lol yes Horsemad it was guilt that was making the ex pay. I knew it wouldn't last forever but he did keep saying to the BO that he wanted to stay involved with the horses. I think the new GF & the baby have something to do with that though. (for those keeping track lol that is a 2 month old baby and we broke up 10 months ago) #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#I have had 2 possible pb's for Trick fall through. I obviously have not mentioned Marty yet as trying to find a pb for a lame horse is a waste of time. Private stables around here seem to run the same as where I am . I am at somewhat of a private now. I am going to try finding a place to put Marty if he needs time to recover.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Again if I look to lease out one I still have to pick on which one to go. I found one place that is cheap but only has room for one horse. Again which one?#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Whoever said money didn't buy happiness obviously never had to worry about money...#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

#ed_op#/P#ed_cl##ed_op#P#ed_cl#Money may not buy happiness, but it sure can buy lots of stuff that can make you happy. And it definitely takes the pressure off so you can concentrate on happiness. I hope things work out for you, Cheryl. I'm sure you could use a break! #ed_op#IMG src="http://www.forums.equestrianconnection.com/richedit/smileys/Happy/20.gif"#ed_cl##ed_op#/P#ed_cl##ed_op#P#ed_cl# #ed_op#/P#ed_cl##ed_op#P#ed_cl# #ed_op#/P#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Patricia he was paying because of guilt and he had said he wanted to still be involved with the horses. If wanted to be involved then he needed to pay. Trick was orphaned at not quite 4 days old so he is like our baby so it was like child custody arraingement. Marty is the horse he rode when we were together and Marty is a good babysiter.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Well looks like for now I am going to try and find a pb for Trick. Fingers crossed.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Hello #ed_op#IMG src="http://forums.equestrianconnection.com/richedit/smileys/Happy/12.gif"#ed_cl#,#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Well I had to go through a similar situation a year ago. If you have to sell. Then you have to pick the more sellable of the pair. This I would be assuming would be Trick? Being that Marty is currently lame. Uckie thing to go through but life will give you another special one, as things happen for a reason (been saying that a lot lately!). If you feel you can finacially afford both, medical bills et all (unexpected) then I would suggest perhaps leasing Trick if possible and getting your other boy all healed up then making that decision. #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Good luck.. as I've said been there done that. Not good to go through.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Pick the one you have the bond with and enjoy the most. There are tons of options, but honestly, if one of them has a huge vet emergency and can't be leased again, you'll be in the hole and have two horses to feed again. Sounds cruel, I'm sorry, but I don't want you to have to lose both of them. #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#
