Gleaning!! Anyone else do it?

Postby MacnRio » Mon Oct 31, 2005 11:59 am

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#OK, anyone else know what it MEANS? I was just informed of the term on the weekend...#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#I decided on Saturday to go out and see if I could find any corn to collect on the 18 acres I rent out for crops - this year corn. The combine had been and gone and I thought I'd go see what was left over. I probably collected about 70-80lbs in 2 hours (with the cobs on). I later saw my parents and friends of theirs and told them about the corn I collected. I was informed that what I was doing was "gleaning", going and collecting crop after it was mechanically harvested. Cool.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#So, yesterday, being the gorgeous day it was, I went out (with the help of AQHAgirl and her daughter) and we collected another approx 90lbs........ It is CRAZY what the combine misses/leaves behind. And a lot of them are whole cobs! I actually find being out there and unearthing cobs to be fun.... lol#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Anyone else go out and glean their fields/fields around them? #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Some tips, the best places to look are on corners, or where they have to curve (it seems they knock more corn over then goes through the knives, this is where we got TONS of whole cobs still on the stalk) or where the combine has to turn around alot (where the crop changes direction). I will keep going out to collect it - treats for the horses and may mix it in with their clean oats - 3 parts oats to one part corn - until I've covered most of the 18 acres. Still have a few corners/turn arounds to go!!#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#I've gotten so much I'm thinking I could open my own coop #ed_op#IMG src="http://forums.equestrianconnection.com/richedit/smileys/Happy/4.gif"#ed_cl##ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#I was #ed_op#EM#ed_cl#planning#ed_op#/EM#ed_cl# on gleaning the cornfields attached to our boarding stable this year (for the goats) but they went and planted soybeans this year.#ed_op#IMG src="http://forums.equestrianconnection.com/richedit/smileys/Angry/6.gif"#ed_cl# A couple of other cornfields I had my eye one, they harvested early and ploughed the next day. Humph!#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#That just sounds like a really labour intensive and time consuming way to get some corn for the beasts when you can p/u the phone and have the feed store deliver a bag for less than $20! #ed_op#IMG src="http://www.forums.equestrianconnection.com/richedit/smileys/Teasing/12.gif"#ed_cl##ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#My horses went and did that a year or 2 ago, when I had a mare that would knock over my electric fence(til I got a stronger fencer!). I found them in a farmers corn field, after they had combined it, munching away on the corn left behind! Luckily they just came right up to me, so I didn't have to spend forever trying to catch them.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Depending on what crops they plant on either side of the tractor road that I walk my dog through, I will glean for corn to bring back to feed the squirrels and Jays with. Last year they didn't take down one of the corn fields for some strange reason, so I managed to get quite a bit throughout the winter. The place was also teaming with wild turkeys and deer - lots of things for the dog to chase #ed_op#IMG src="http://www.addis-welt.de/smilie/smilie/diverse/Bolt.gif"#ed_cl##ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#My dad does that. He walks around the field everynight and stuffs his pockets with it. The horses love it...well Dusty does because him being the bully he is, pushes Splash and the goats away and eats theirs.Me and my neighbour did something bad last year, we went through one neighbours field, and picked what we could find what was left over, and then we went to the other field that hadnt been harvested yet, and took some from there #ed_op#IMG src="http://forums.equestrianconnection.com/richedit/smileys/Other/1.gif"#ed_cl#It was not my idea, and I later found out that the neighbor said it was ok. phew! lol#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#I don't bother with corn, but I do usually get 50 lbs. or more of potatoes. Amazing how an OTTB can become a pack mule. #ed_op#IMG src="http://forums.equestrianconnection.com/richedit/smileys/Shocked/5.gif"#ed_cl##ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Ditto tbbrat! ;)#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Jax, some farmers will leave the corn standing for the winter - they can take it off the next spring, as long as it hasn't fallen over! Even then they can harvest it, it's just harder.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#I have to admit, I did take a few cobs before the combine came in....#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#GOW, the farmer won't be back -except to turn the ground (and corn) under. I'm only in the field I own at the moment, so he can't really tell me to not do it on my property!! And I doubt many of them would care, I dont figure they are going to go pick it up. But, if I do want to go to other fields, I WILL call them first!#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Cheryl, maybe your horse just hasn't figured out how to get it off the cob? I have been "teaching" Willie how to get the corn off the cob (push a few off, into my hand, feed them to him so the cob is "started"). Salt (the goat who I think is really a PIG!) has figured it out!!#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#
