Add me to the list of "ex-users".  I've got some pounds that I need to shed, and as much as I've been trying, I just can't get rid of 'em!  I figure the pill wasn't helping (gained about 20 pounds since I started current pill), so I decided to ditch it....
BUT, I still need a form of birth control, and really want to stay away from any hormonal type of drug....... Anyone have any recommendations for non-hormonal contraceptives?  I know there are condoms, but I really don't like them (will use them if I have to!), I was thinking of getting a diaphragm...... What is everyone else's experiences with them?  Are they expensive?  Any other recommendations???

Nope, can't help.&nbsp; Had to go off BC a few years ago because of an injury-related blood clot (big, high <IMG src="smileys/smiley3.gif" border="0">&nbsp;- very scary).&nbsp; Since then I've only been with men who've been snipped <IMG src="smileys/smiley2.gif" border="0">.&nbsp;
However, a friend of mine speaks very highly about the cervical "cap" (if I remember correctly).&nbsp; It is more "fitted" than a diaphragm, less chance of displacement.&nbsp; Have you talked to your doctor?&nbsp; He/she should have recommendations based on your lifestyle/preferences.
Know what you mean about condoms <IMG src="smileys/smiley11.gif" border="0">.

tbbrat - I knew there was something similar out there to a diaphragm, I just couldn't remember the name of it!&nbsp; I have to get in to see my doc for a Pap in the next couple months, so I will speak with her then..... but I think I'm stuck with condoms for now....<IMG src="smileys/smiley11.gif" border="0">
I'm gonna go Google "cervical cap" and see what I come up with...thanks!

I really liked the sponge, but developed a bit of an allergy to something in it. The sponge in conjunction with a condom is supposed to be very effective. My sister has recently gotten an IUD, but I haven't spoken to her since she got it to find out how she's liking it.

The allergic reaction I had wasn't too hideous, similar to a yeast infection but not as uncontrollably itchy. It took me years of using them to develop the allergy, not just a few times.

Is the sponge available over the counter, or do I have to go see my doc to get a prescription?

Off the shelf in a pharmacy in the BC area, I doubt they're behind the counter and certainly were'nt when I used them.

Hmm, I was looking in the drugstore the other day in the condom aisle - I found spermicides, but no sponges....... Next time I'm in there, I'll ask the pharmacist...

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#What about an IUD?? They have the same effectiveness as the pill and you don't have to worry when you have sex at all...it has something to do with copper...its very small, you don't feel it, inserted into your cervix. #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#If you get a BC pill with less hormones than you wont gain as much weight.... Theres alot of newer BC pills, I think one is called yasmin or something, and its supposed to have no risks of gaining weight... But its all in the level of hormones and stuff in it. #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#&nbsp;#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#I saw an ad for some new one (seasonale) that has an extremly low level of hormones so I doubt it would make you gain any weight either. I want to look into it, Im going to ask my doctor next week when I go.... Beause theres something VERY appealing to me to only have your period 4 times a year rather than 12 haha. #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#&nbsp;#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Other than that theres tons of other methods, the BC is just the easiest and one of the most effective. #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#
