Okay, so for years I've been having the same problem and it's *really* starting to frustrate me!!
I have *such* a hard time getting up in the morning before 7:10am or so. I have tried everything, I have tried setting my alarm super early to allow me more 'snooze hits' but than I just sleep right through the alarm, I have tried setting it at the time I want to get up (6:20am), but than I just hit snooze until 7:10am, I have tried the radio (which is easy for me to sleep through), I have tried the annoying screeching beep noise on the alarm but than I just reach over and turn it off completly or unplug it, than when I DO wake up, the memory of turning it off is quite foggy... I've tried getting my mom to come down and wake me up but that doesn't work, I just fall asleep again, or I don't even hear her... I've even been known to talk to her, tell her I'm awake and than have no memory of it at all. I've tried putting the clock across the room even!
I used to be going to bed around 11pm, any later than that and I feel terrible the next day, almost like a hangover. Than I thought I would try going to bed earlier, so it's been 10pm for the last couple of weeks and STILL no change So I AM getting a full 8 - 8.5 hours sleep.
I moved into a new house in October and since than I have been having teh best sleeps I can remember having in a looong time. We live in the 'country' now and it's nice and quiet. For the first month of living there I was getting up nice and early, usually before my alarm even went off... I was ecstatic because I thought that my bad sleeping in habit had FINALLY gone away... nope, soon after, I started sleeping in again

I eat healthy, I excersize 4-5 times a week (riding), I don't drink coffee in the afternoon or evenings, and more recently I've actually stopped drinking it during the week all together.
On weekends when I don't set my alarm, it's not like I'm a super late sleeper, I usually wake up on my own between 8am and 9am.
Does anyone have any suggestions? It's really starting to bother me as I don't have time to do anything in the morning. I'm lucky if I have time to eat breakfast and sometimes I don't even have time to make a lunch. Good thing my boss (my dad) is away this week because I was 20 minutes late this morning , and on every other day I'm usualy *just* making it in on time or 5 minutes late.... it's GOT to stop!
Help?

Dee, I hear ya, girl. I, too, am notoriously 5-10 minutes late every day. Thankfully, my boss doesn't bug me about it as I always stay past my 4:00 quitting time...but still, I really WISH that I could make myself get out of bed earlier too, as I hate being late for work EVERY day!!
My alarm goes off at 6:00am but I just LAY there until usually 20-past or sometimes even 30 minutes past the hour!! When I get up that late, I *know* that I'm already late for work...but I just can't seem to drag my butt outta bed any earlier.
I'm not a big "sleeper-inner" either. On weekends, 8:00am is usually as late as I can sleep...but getting up at 6:00 on the weekdays is just impossible for me!!

I'm telling big Willem that you were late!!
Okay, first off, this time of year is bad for the mornings because (a) the sun has no power, and (b) the sun doesn't come up until around 7. You may find it better in the summer.
Second, you are in a basement, and although you have good sized windows, it will still take the sun a bit to come in and light up your room. And your windows point North, don't they?
So, can you get a floor lamp or something that you can put on a timer, so it comes on when your alarm goes off? Or just before your alarm? They have these nice and cheap things that just plug into the socket, and then the lamp plugs into it. I have one if you wanted to try, see if it works.

LOL yeah, forgot to mention that I AM in the basement with north facing windows :s Could play a role... but even when I was living in my last house I was on the main floor with big wondows that were east facing... yep, still slept in
But that DOES sound like a good idea Jax, I will definatly try that! Maybe having a bright light on 'before' my alarm goes off, might get my body in 'wake up' mode. I will definatly take you up on your offer to borrow that timer and see how it works, Thanks!
LOL @ 'Big Willem' hehe, 'Little Willy' was here though, and surprisingly cool about it he must want something
Chenders - glad to know I'm not the only one... I wish I could even get up at early as 6:30am! I just can't do it!! And it's like I *know* I need to get up but my sleepy brain takes over whatever part of my 'logical brain' that's working . For the first while of living in this house and I was getting up nice and early, I felt SO good! I would get up, throw some laundry in, make breakfast, sit and chat with my mom for a bit... but that didn't last long I wanna be a morning person!!

Oh I wish I had that problem! As we probably all know I can't stay asleep. But don't worry I'm always rushing in the morning somehow anyway. Luckily my Mon.-Wed. job I'm the only one here and my Thurs-Sat job, well sometimes I've been 10 minutes late and the first person there! Made me wonder if it was a holiday I didn't know about. One owner is notoriously late and she doesn't even have horses! Ever notice horse people are always running late?
The lamp idea sounds good, but personally many moons ago when I used to sleep, I just exercised self-discipline and got my rump out of the bed, I've never hit a snooze button in my life, I find they are dangerous. The only problem I could never get around is that sometimes I would fall instantaneously sound asleep after hitting the alarm. Once a few months ago (Terry is in charge of the alarm)I fell back asleep as I was rolling over to put my glasses on and get up.

Ruth - My brother has been having the same problem... he just can't sleep. He will go to bed and lay there forever, finally he'll fall asleep only to wake up in the morning around 2 or so, than he'll go read or something to try and make himself tired again and finally get back to sleep... sometimes not until after 4am It's been going on for months.
You see, if it were as easy as excersizing self discipline I think I could do it... it's just that half the time I hit my snooze button I AM asleep... I don't even remember it... Or I just sleep right through it... it's not a matter of being lazy (i wish it were), it's that I don't know what I'm doing . I just 'wake up' at 7:10 or so and go "omg, did I turn my alarm off!?"... or "omg, I slept through it again!"... ... why can't I just be a morning person? LOL

HA! No, I was seriously thinking about that this morning (NOT that I would have kids to get rid of this problem! LOL)... no, no, I was thinking that it's a good thing I DON'T have a kid... I would probably sleep right through his crying... I'm serious, I really think I would!

Dee, what you need to do is get the biggest honkin' LOUDEST alarm you can get, set it on "ring" instead of "radio" and put it on the other side of your bed. Then, when it goes off, it'll be sooo loud and annoying that you'll HAVE to get up to turn it off.
I actually don't have a problem with hitting the snooze button...I just leave the radio on and listen to it and the minutes tick by
I agree with Ruth...it really is a discipline thing. I would MUCH rather just stay in my warm beddy-by versus getting up in the COLD and DARK to go to work <blech!> I don't understand people who just LEAP outta bed the second the alarm goes off (my DH does this...grrrr! )

Oh, I typed out this nice big post and it ended up in a black hole somewhere.
My sister used to be like you until she got a neurotic Sheltie who won't allow her to sleep for more than 6 hours at a go. When we were still at home she had the loudest alarm clock that woke everyone in the house up except her and she was the one right next to it. She's had that problem all her life until she adopted that dog. Some people do need more than 8 hours sleep, you may be one of them.
I hope you didn't think I was calling you lazy! My self-discipline lies in not allowing myself to use the snooze button. That way there's no fall back plan and I get too worried about sleeping in to actually do it. Except for that odd day when I fall back asleep on the way out of the bed, but that probably only happens once a year.
I'm going to try the Valerian tonight. If it works I'll let you know and maybe your brother could see if it works for him.

Heehee Ruth, no, I didn't think you were calling me lazy ;) I actually have just thought before that maybe I *am* lazy and just do it on purpose... but I now, really think it's some kind problem

Chenders - I actually think I sound exactly like Ruths sister used to be... I have tried putting the alarm on the loudest BUZZZZZ noise... it actually sounds more like a loud screeching "BUZZZ BUZZ BUZZZ!!!" It scares the crap outta me and than it gets turned *gasp* OFF... or, I sometimes will, somehow (don't ask how)... sleep right through it... the noises get incorportated into my dreams .

I put the radio really loud once and in my dream I was doing the funky chicken to the song on the radio it was a scary one! LOL
Ruth - I have two cats, one of them looooves to wake me up in the morning... unfortunatly it's usually way to early for me to get up... it's all a blur once it's actually time for me to get out of bed... this morning it must have been about 4:30 or 5am... he sat right on my stomache and started kneeding me... than he fell asleep there... gues we both fell asleep Next thing I knew it was 7:15am and Roger, Rick & Marlyn were in my ear.

Our alarm gets progressively louder until you shut it off. I thought that was a good idea. I never use a radio because of the dream incorporation factor.

Hmm, that does sound like a good alarm... I find the beeping ones, that just stay at the same noise level are so annoying and startle you out of your sleep... well, you just end up turning them off Or having a bad start to the day.

Maybe I should try the beeping one really quiet... Jax was telling me about an alarm clock her dad had that you could barely hear... she was on the other side of the house and her dads alarm would wake her every morning at 6:30am... maybe I need something quiet?

Heehee, I just thought - I have a Kellogg's Corn Flakes alarm clock somewhere that instead of ringing, crows like a rooster. And I mean ear shattering loud. Scares the absolute CRAP outta everyone in the house. Your cats would freak...OUT!! It would literally launch me out of bed every morning in a panic. I gave up after about a month because it just wasn't a good way to start the day.
Wanna borrow that??

I have the same problem getting up. Actually I get up with the bf at 5:45, feed the cats and dog, have breakfast and go back to bed since I don't go to work until 10. The alarm is set for 8 and I usually listen to the radio (dozing) until 8:30 or 9. Then I feel rotten! Maybe it will get better when there's more light. Or could be partly to do with too many deaths recently - maybe I'm depressed and don't know it?
I remember a girl in my residence at Uni who would sleep through any alarm. She got one that vibrated so hard it would fall off the shelf and onto her head - the only way she could get up!

That is also pretty funny. Don't think I'd like to start my day with being hit on the head though! Candy the Rottweiler used to put her head right in front of mine and stare at me until I woke up. I've always wondered how that worked because it's not like she made any noise, and how long she had to stare before I woke up.

Sunny side up that is true in a way I have two kids and my Daughter(the oldest 4)is like her dad my boyfriend she stays up late and sleeps in, which sucks because the baby(9 months) he likes to go to bed early and wake up early so I put him to bed and then Im up till 12am or 1am with my daughter and the she sleeps till like 11-12 the next day and the baby well he wakes up early around 9 or so. So I get no sleep. Its a good thing Im home schooling my daughter or she would never get up for school. I cant seem to break her of that habit. I BLAME HER FATHER.
As for your not being able to get up my boyfriend has to same problem. If he just forces him self to get up and walks right into the shower he is fine. If he doesnt take a shower as soon as he gets up youll find him fast asleep again where ever he sat down. So if you put your alarm in the other side of the room you get up to shut it off so just walk right to the shower and dont go back and lay down.

I like the idea of a light on a timer. I think lack of daylight has a lot to do with it. See if you can get a full spectrum light bulb so that it simulates daylight. Have it turn on about 30 minutes before your alarm.

I had the same problem many years ago. I was in a job that I really hated and I used to turn my alarm off in my sleep before it went off. I was very glad to get out of that place and my sleep patterns went back to normal.

i had that problem when i was in highschool..... i had 3 alarms, set up in different spots in my room, all where i had to get out of bed to shut them off... and i had one set so that it would start to ring about 30 sec after the first, and then iin another min the last one would go off.... as long as i had to get out of bed and stay out for a certain bit i was ok.. but i could get up shut the one off and get back into bed and be back asleep in no time...
and just something i am finding with myself now... I take calcium magnesim now, started taking it cause of muscle cramps, always being tired but not sleeping well..But since i've been doing that my sleeping has been better and more restful, and waking up hasn't been as hard (though today i was asleep till 10:30 in the morn, but i knew it was a no class day!)
