Ruth, my dog does the exact same thing - just STARES at me and I wake up. No idea how long it takes him, but it works.
Dee, I brought the timer in - go get yourself a grow light!

Wow, didn't realise so many other people have troubles (or *had*) getting up in the morning! Guess I'm not the only one!

Elizabeth - Thanks for the idea of the spectrum light I'll be sure to pick one up this weekend and give it a whirl.
Jax - Thanks for the timer! Can't wait to see how it works on Monday morning I was late AGAIN today, you were three cars behind me when you turned onto your works road... that was at 8:05... I'm supposed to be into work by 8am

Habit, habit, habit. I did that also until I got so fed up with rushing. So, I started to get up ONE hour earlier...it was great. Had time for coffee, breakfast, lunch, bed and dishes. Now I'm retired and hate to sleep in...a habit again...just feel that if it's after seven half the day is gone. Am up between 5 and 6. Earlier than the birds these days.

All that rushing first thing in the morning was just too much.

YES! I'm getting soooo sick of it too!! But I LOVE sleep LOL...
Yesterday morning I broke a record and was up at 6:55am that's 15 minutes earlier than usual!!!

I forgot to get the timer from Jax last night So I tried something, I FORCED myself LOL. My alarm went of at 6:20, I automatically hit the snooze button... my alarm went off again at 6:30, I rolled over, groaned (haha) and tunred by lamp on beside my bed... I hit snooze again and I kind of slowly woke up! At first the light just bothered my eyes, made them hurt and I wanted to go under the covers... but than I started to wake up a bit more... the light also got my cats up so they started bugging me.... I was up by 6:45! LOL, not the greatest improvement but better than before.
I think the light thing might just work!!
And I CAN do it!!

Oh, I just love my sleep so much!! In the morning I always feel like I just closed my eyes for 10 seconds
Anyway, thanks for the ideas guys!

lol, Dee my roommate has the same problem getting up in the morning. Ive told her to get a lamp on a timer also. So far she hasnt but i think it would help. As it is she has her alarm go off and then her cel phone is set to have 3 different alarms go off. It wakes the rest of us up, but not her! Altho I prefer the cel phone rings to the annoying buzzing of her alarm! When she only used that it would go off for like 15 min before she would turn it off!! And then she would hit snooze and it would go off again for a long time!

Dee22: This is more a message for your non-sleeping brother. I tried the Valerian the last 2 nights and while I wouldn't say it solved the problem it definitely helped. I'm sure it would be good for difficulty falling asleep (not my problem), but I did find I still woke up early once it was starting to wear off, but not as early.

It takes discipline not to hit the snooze button. Solutions:
- Put the alarm where you HAVE to get up to shut it off;
- If using the radio function, set it to a station you hate, and set it LOUD;
- Make consequences for being late, e.g. have your boss dock your pay for each 15 minutes you are late;
- Once you are out of bed, KEEP MOVING -- shower, get breakfast, whatever -- don't lie down again.

You can do this, if you want to do it enough.

I actually used to be horrible at waking up too, but how I kicked that habit was - just as I was laying down to bed, I would repeat over and over again in my head "Wake up with the alarm!"
It worked.

Hey! I'm going to try that! I know I have done something like that before... said a time over and over in my head before sleep and than I'd wake up near that time... I've done it before on weekends... I'll try it! LOL
Thanks Ruth, I will let my brother know... he has troubles getting to sleep as well as waking in the night... maybe it's his guilty concience for all the bad things he does to me? I will tell him about the Valerian... do you just get it from a doctor? Is it a sleeping pill?
His problem is that he refuses to go see a doctor about anything
DD - Thanks for the tips... LOL there is no WAY I'm telling my dad to dock my pay, I'll be broke! Trust me the temper I have to deal with when I come into work late should most definatly be enough incentive to get here on time... but it just does no good... it's not that I have a hard time staying awake once I'm up, once I'm out of bed I'm fine. It's that I do stupid things when I'm half asleep... Like I will unplug the alarm clock when it goes off at 6:30, wake up at 7:30 and wonder why my alarm didn't go off I don't remember! Things slowly start coming back to me... or I vaguely remember unplugging it... but it's like I can't help it! But the light thing DID help a bit... so maybe we're on to something here

Valerian is a root and is available in pill form at any pharmacy in the vitamins/herbal remedies. I am using the Life Brand 100 mg one right now, but Swiss makes a straight 500mg Valerian and also another one that combines Valerian with some other sleepy herbs. You're not supposed to take it nightly for more than 2 weeks, though. That's fine for me as I only take it to avoid TWO bad sleeps in a row, so only use it 2 or 3 times a week.

Have you ever tried catnip tea? It's great for making you sleepy. I just pick the wild stuff in the summer and dry it for me and the kitties. Warning - it tastes lousy, so lots of honey!

Hey Jax, I used to have that exact same alarm clock, the one that makes the rooster sound.
That would get you up Dee.
I too have a slight issue with falling back asleep. I'll get up and turn my alarm clock off (which IS on the other side of the room) but either I'm cold or tired so I'll lay back in bed to "wake up" and sometimes I fall back asleep. So I have to make sure my alarm clock is on the other side of the room (I had it on the dresser right beside my bed, but that SO didn't work), and then after it beeps I turn it to radio and I turn my bedroom light on so that if I do lay down in bed I've got something to listen to.

tbbrat: teas are no good for me as they make me have to get up and pee in the middle of the night. Also I have absolutely no problem falling asleep, its staying that way.

Thanks Ruth, I will recomend that stuff to my brother! I feel bad for him, he comes into work looking SO tired and it's been getting worse. He has big puffy rings under his eyes and his eyes are all bloodshot etc. He needs SLEEP! Must be a terrible thing to not be able to sleep... or stay asleep once your there. I actually know he won't go buy it himself so I think I will go get some FOR him... than he'll give it a try
GU - I think being cold in the morning has a bit to do with my problem too. I live in the basement so it's obviously a little more chilly down there. When I finally DO wake up I'm nice and warm and cozy in my bed and don't want to get out!
Funny thing though, this morning (Saturday, no work) I didn't have my alarm set but I automatically woke up at 6:30am... and it wasn't just open the eyes drift off to sleep again. I was AWAKE, sat up, looked at the clock... felt like I could get up... I had to lay there for quite a while until I could get back to sleep Either I'm telling myself I HAVE to get up early is working OR I just don't like getting up for work purposes! LOL... I got the timer from Jax so we'll see if that works, maybe I'll try it tomorrow morning and see how it goes.
I read somewhere that in order to not disturb your routine you should still get up at the same time on your days off work that you do on the days you do work Maybe I'll have to start doing that too.

Oh definitely Dee....who wants to get out of bed when they're all warm and cozy? I do find in the summer it's much easier to get out of bed because it's warmer out and brighter out.
I have heard that aswell, that you should get up at relatively the same time everyday...but I don't do it...I need my sleep on the weekends. I'm one of those people who needs ATLEAST 8 hrs of sleep, and even that I still feel tired the next morning, but not too much can be done about that, so I usually get 10hrs on the weekends (10hrs each day, not in total)

Dee and Ruth, really glad to hear that your problems with sleeping and
waking up are getting better. It makes such a difference to how we feel
when we get a decent night's sleep, not too much and not too little!!
