Illio-Tibial Band Syndrome

Postby Ridingdouds » Tue Mar 22, 2005 11:42 am

Hi all,#ed_op#br#ed_cl##ed_op#br#ed_cl#I saw a physiotherapist for my knees a few
monthsagoand was diagnosied with ITBS. Has anybody had it? If so, did
youovercome it? I took home some exercises to do, but I'm loosing all
motivation to do them since every time I try running again, the
paincomes back in 10 mins or less. I'm at the point where I doubt that
I will ever overcome it and be able to run again. :(#ed_op#br#ed_cl#Anyone knows about ITBS and has ideas?#ed_op#br#ed_cl##ed_op#br#ed_cl##ed_op#br#ed_cl##ed_op#br#ed_cl##ed_op#br#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Have you thought of going to see an orthotics doctor? I like to run but my knees get super sore(can even walk down the stairs) along with my shins(shin splints) And it turns out Im not alined proporly due to my feet which cause my knees shine back... everything to hurt. I have my orthotics now and I find it to help a lot I do get shin splints every so often. I even put them in my riding boots to help me while jumping(knees get sore). So you may want to look into that....(if your in the Barrie area I know a good foot guy... lol) Pm me if you are...#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Have you checked out some of the running websites like Runner's World (runnersworld.com I think)?  They would be a good resource for advice on things like ITBS.  But stretches are important!!  along with ice and NSAIDs.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#As for the running, are you trying to do too much or too fast?  Are you warming up slowly and doing some stretches before you get going?#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Orthotics would definitely be worth looking into - they can really help if you have a conformational problem.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

Thanks for your suggestion guys. I might have to see an othotics as I
think I have a slight conformational problem (my knees are naturally
turned a bit inward). tbbrat, I'm definitely going to check out this
site!#ed_op#br#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Almost all women have knees that turn inwards!  It's because of our hips being wider, and it does make for a bit more stress on our legs when we run - not that I'm a great runner . . .but I read a lot!  (Actually planning to run tonight after work - twice this week, woohoo!)#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

My doc says I should get inserts. My question is...can I just buy full inserts from a drug store?

I would have to go all the way to Montreal to see a specialist. My foot gets sore at time but not enough to keep me from doing whatever. Is this the same thing as you guys are talking about?

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#By all means, try the inserts from the drug store - or go to a Running Room (or any other "running")store - they should be able to watch you walk/run and recommend a suitable insert.  They are generally fairly knowledgeable about these things.  It's certainly a cheaper way to go than full-blown orthotics (especially if you're not insured for them!) so if they'll work for you . . . #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

Hey guys,

I run quite a bit (have completed one full marathon, several halfs, and several 25 - 30k trail runs). I can tell you that IT band problems are very, very common for runners.

Just last night I attended a seminar on Active Release Therapy. There's a website - ActiveRelease.com that you might find very helpful. It's a recognized form of massage therapy, but basically gets right to the point and root of the problem. You can often be "fixed" in only 4 treatments. It's painful at the time of administration, but relief can be instant afterwards.

Anyway, my only suggestions are to try the ART, and make extra sure you are running in the right shoes for you and your feet and your stride. Be careful going to the big chain running stores, as sometimes they just hire kids who don't know a whole lot, but if you do your homework before going to get fitted for shoes you should know enough to know if they know what they're doing.

Don't let this stop you from running!! It's such an amazing sport with such great results for your body AND mind.

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#No they will not work. The cutome made ones are at certain angles and the ones at thedrug store arent. Take the trip and get the good ones you'll be happy you did#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#
