#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#I have a little 14 hand horse that is so fast I am the only experienced rider that seems to be able to handle him comfortably.  He isn't a dangerous horse, he just does things like do a 90 or 180 in one move. Back on haunches, front legs up and bam you are facing sideways or back on the trail...He likes jumping too.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#IMG src="http://members.allstream.net/~wizards/NPPages/quigbabe1.JPG"#ed_cl##ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#He is slow and gentle with the inexperienced as you can see by the pic.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#I would like to enter him in western shows since he seems suited for it.  How do I start?  Can you just enter one or do you have to be a QH owner?  Mine is not a QH.  #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Where are they held if we have any near us. I live east of Ottawa by "The Horse People".   #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#How do you learn the rules and protocols?  Is there a web site?#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Can you get specs for how a pole bending or barrels are supposed to be  setup for competition so I can practice staying on while he flies through them?  Also recommended depth of sand for when he stops in a hurry or roll back like he does where it is sandy.  I am not sure if that is the right word.  His 180 in sand is different, more slidy than from his 180 on grass.  #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#What do you have to wear during a show?  Is there such a thing as a western helmet?#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#thanks,#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#sugar#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#(Bovaid cowtags for keeping flies off him...if you were wondering about the yellow tags.)#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Sugar, I'm sorry, I'm not expert in Western riding but I just wanted to suggest to you to attend local fairs to participate in Western events.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#They are a good place to start.  At alot of the fairs around here, (I'm in the Ottawa area as well)  the classes are low-level and less stressful.  You have a wide range of participants and (usually) many classes to chose from.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#I showed Western once at the Navan fair a looooong time ago.  (one of the most embarassing things ever, not cause it was Western, but because I didn't know what I was doing, LOL).  The show was fun, there was horses of all sizes, colors and breeds.  You don't need a registered horse to go to fairs unless it's a breed specific class (which they're weren't when I was there).   #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#I'd do a regular showmanship class just to get exposed and get a feel for everything first, or do other easy classes.  Traditional attire is best, and though everyone in my classes (including me) wore a cowboy had, I can't see how judges could object you wearing a helmet if it was your choice!#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Good luck, hope you have fun!!!  There's tons of little fairs around here you can have a great time at!  #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#I haven't seen them for a while, don't know if the still exist, but they used to make Western Hat style helmets!! I can't remember where I saw them, probably on Ebay, but I'm sure they sell them in a tack shop somewhere. Something to think about anyways...!!#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#The only western circuit I know of in the Ottawa area is the Eastern Ontario Quarter Horse Association - they have a number of shows each summer, but you have to have a registered QH...... As far as other shows go, I know there are about 6 shows at the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds, starting in May I think....... - keep an eye on #ed_op#A href="http://www.equistation.com"#ed_cl#www.equistation.com#ed_op#/A#ed_cl# - they have show listings on there.  Also, why not call The Horse People?  I know they are into english, but I'm sure they'd have a good idea of where to look for western shows.....#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Like Lix suggested, try your local fairs...they always have western classes, and you don't need any points or breed registration to enter....just show up and pay your money!#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#For speed events, you can wear and english style helmet and not get penalized for it...I know on the AQHA circuit, only juniors (under 16?) are allowed to wear helmets - you actually get penalized for wearing one as an adult....#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Hi, there is a website called horseshow.ca that list shows based on location, disipline etc.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#There is also the Ontario Barrel Racing Association that has shows all over they do all the gaming not just the barrels.  I used to have all the specs for how far apart barrels and poles are set up but for some reason can't find it on the computer when I look.  If I find it I will post it for you so you can set up at home and practice.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#A href="http://www.horseshows.ca/default.asp"#ed_cl#http://www.horseshows.ca/default.asp#ed_op#/A#ed_cl##ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#A href="http://www.obra.ca/"#ed_cl#http://www.obra.ca/#ed_op#/A#ed_cl##ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# Other website like Ontario Equestrian federation or Equine Ontario might also have listings for events in Ontario...... try calling maybe some western boading stables in you area and ask if someone there cam direct you to some local saddle clubs or associations that have barrel racing etc.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Also there is the local fairs.....Here is the website for all of Ontario's Fairs. normally most fairs have horse shows where there is western stuff and gaming that anyone can enter into.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#A href="http://www.ontariofairs.com/"#ed_cl#http://www.ontariofairs.com/#ed_op#/A#ed_cl# you can go to the website and search for fairs by region.  Hope some of this helps.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#
