Arthritis

Postby beccyroo » Sat Sep 03, 2005 8:54 pm

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Well today at the show I was at Mayflower started to limp on her left foreleg again, earlier this year she had twisted the fetlock on that leg, so needless to say I pulled her out of the remaining 6 classes. But anyhow, I guess I should get a bit more on topic, seeing as this is about her limp. The owner of the barn, who also used to own Mayflower, says that it is probably the beginning of arthritis, ughhh. :( She'll probably have a 10 day rest again... Which I guess will work better for me also as I start high school on Tuesday.. Hopefully it will be better then, and then probably I will give her a rest from mid-November to February, and then board at a barn with an indoor arena for a couple month until the weather, and ground conditions start to improve. #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#I guess what I would like is some advice on whether this is the right thing to do, and if there are any supplements or such that could be fed to help with the arthritis. #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Ughh... I'm so confused, not to mention disappointed :( Oh well Hopefully she'll be a bit better soon :)#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#I second the x-rays. At the very least it will give you a base line to see how fast and where the arthritic changes are happening. Since your horse had a injury, then it's even more critical that you are able to know exactly what is going on in there. Did you have an x-ray taken when she twisted the fetlock?#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#I believe the vet did take an x-ray in may when she twisted her fetlock, I guess that would be the only way he could know for sure ... I'm pretty sure he did, but I don't totally know, as the owner of the barn was there when he came out since I was unable to, I still was in school. #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

X-rays will help you to know what is happening in there, and if she had one when she twisted her fetlock, then that will be the basis to see if anything has worsened since that time!

I must sound like a broken record but -- try magnets on her, it won't cure the arthritis, and don't think that it will, but it lessens the pain and helps to keep the stiffness at bay for them. One of my old showjumpers was 18 when his ringbone started to get bad and arthritis was starting to give him trouble -- put them on, and he went jumping for another few years, until he was 22. He could still be jumping now, but I've so many youngsters coming on, and he was getting to the highest point he could jump. Plus jumping high at that age really does have its worries for me, last thing I wanted was to break him down. So now he is retired at 24 and babysitting my colt -- he's as happy as larry!

Certainly something you can look into at least... or get the owner to look into if they can.

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Hey SP, I don't know if this will help or not, but Greenhawk has magnetic hock boots @ $64.95, also, magnetic leg inserts @ $28.95(to go inside a regular leg wrap) and magnetic bell boots @ $39.95. I just saw these in the new Greenhawk catalogue. They are made by Gaitmaster.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl# #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#STRONG#ed_cl##ed_op#EM#ed_cl##ed_op#FONT face=Verdana color=#0060bf size=2#ed_cl#SP -- The ones in Aussie that I use are an actual single wrap which rests above the hock, however I've recently seen ones that look more like a sports wrap you would wear on your knee which fits the hock. If you do a search on the net for "Magnetic Hock Boots" or something, I'm sure something will come up in your area -- then you can look around for prices, styles etc to see what would suit your horse and budget. I couldn't tell you the price of the ones I get, because I haven't had to order any for about 6 or so years -- they have lasted a lifetime literally! Plus with me been in Aussie, it really doesn't give you an idea of what the pricing is of the boots over there. I hope that helps though!#ed_op#/FONT#ed_cl##ed_op#/EM#ed_cl##ed_op#/STRONG#ed_cl##ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#My arab has arthritis and our vert recommened cortizone shots. When he was first diagnosed, I didn't know better and that is what we did. However, it was hard because my horse was NOT happy about it and it caused him a lot of stress. Plus, over time, cortizone actually breaks down the fluid and causes more harm then good (this is what I have found anyways). So, I went searching on my own and found a company out of Guelph, Ont called "Herbs for Horses". There were the only company (at that time that I found) that did a straight Glucosamine Sulfate. All the other brands I found had filler which, to me, is a waste of money - why give my horse filler if he doesn't need it?? Anyways, Ive had him on the GS ever since and he is sound and happy. Ive been really happy with it. #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#I agree that you should have your horse vet checked to make sure that is the problem and not something else. If it is arthritis, then I would recommend the GS. #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#
